Hear some new approaches to guitar music from guitarist-composers on this New Sounds. The guitarist-composer Fabi Reyna is the founder and editor of She Shreds, a magazine dedicated to women guitarists and bassists. Her cumbia-punk trio, Sávlia, places the guitar at the foreground of their unique blend of cumbia music and R&B. Hear music by Sávlia along with something from fingerstyle guitarist Shana Cleveland of the surf-noir band, La Luz.
Then, listen to guitarist-composers not only from the Americas, but from North Africa. Hear music rooted in Tunisian folk from Sabry Mosbah, whose piece “Rock Mjarred”, features chant-like vocals paired with a 5/4 groove. There's also Tuareg guitar music from Bombino (the guitarist and composer Omara Moctar). His latest album is called Deran, which celebrates his desert home - how to protect it, develop it, unify it, respect it and, above all, never forget it.
