Hear music by and an interview with composer, improviser, drummer, trombonist, and pianist Tyshawn Sorey. A 2017 MacArthur Fellow, Sorey makes music that is wonderfully hard to pin down and floats best when presented at a “neutral ground” – a festival like the Music Now Festival in Cincinnati or Big Ears in Knoxville, with no listening expectations. Listen to Sorey’s “Autoschediasm” for a hybrid conducted improvisation language that came out of Sorey’s work with both Butch Morris and Anthony Braxton. Recorded at the Music Now Festival, the Dublin-based new music group Crash Ensemble plays the composed and improvised work, conducted by Tyshawn Sorey. Then, hear commercially-released work from Tyshawn Sorey, recorded as a trio from his 2017 record, Verisimilitude, along with another trio recording from his record, Alloy.
Plus, hear music from Chicago-based drummer, composer, and producer, Makaya McCraven, recorded with tuba player Theon Cross, and sax player Nubya Garcia, along with other collaborators in London, and recomposed the improvisations for the record, Where We Come From (CHICAGOxLONDON Mixtape).
