What does it really mean to make opera in the 21st century? That’s the question that keeps the artists of American Modern Opera Company up at night, and those of us that love the art form should all be grateful for it. It’s hard to think of more compelling advocates for the cause than co-founders Matt Aucoin, a composer and conductor who recently won a MacArthur “Genius” grant, and Zack Winokur, who’s been behind some of the most interesting productions we have seen on stages and concert halls anywhere lately. The core company – which includes the likes of our favorites Julia Bullock and Davóne Tines – focuses on long-term artistic relationships and discipline-colliding collaborations that address – with radical brilliance and joy - some of the most pressing issues of our time, including race, gender and social justice.
